Glen,

I did what you asked: commented out all tests except the trig one, where 
the fastest speedup occurred. Both gcc 3.4.2 and gcc 4.0 gave results 
comparable, if not slightly faster, to what was witnessed before.

gcc 3.4.2:
    Benching trigonometric:  71.5633*std  71.6147*raw.
gcc 4.0.0:
    Benching trigonometric:  453.305*std  453.477*raw.

Of course, you're only welcome to use the quote; besides, there's no 
copyright on it.
